I don’t care what Mike and Bryan said one time during some interview, Kataang is not the heart of Avatar.
It’s important to Aang and Katara’s characters, sure, but you’ll never convince me that it’s “the dna of the show”.

I feel like if you take out all Kataang interaction though, you have very little of the show’s message. The whole idea of friendships so strong that you can conquer anything. If you take Kataang out of the show, Aang would have never been found in the iceberg and Katara and Sokka wouldn’t have gone with him. Those three became a family, in place of the family they all lost. Kataang is a HUGE part of that family. It shows that blood is not what makes the decision on who your family is, strong bonds and connections decides that. Also, a big part of Kataang is that without Katara things would have ended up very differently for Aang. In other words, in book 2, he would have died. I can definitely see where the creators are coming from, Kataang was in the basic DNA of the show from the very beginning.

Role-Reversal very very very AU -

Lolololol even though that’s what THE CREATORS have said;

Bryke: Yeah, Aang-Katara, that romance. Some stuff developed along the way, and we’re glad some fans are more receptive to that element of the show, but it was in the DNA of the thing from the start.

PROTIP: Usually when creators say something about their show, it’s not just ~fan interpretation~, it’s because it’s THEIR. SERIES. Meaning, that’s what they INTENDED. Meaning, whether you like it or not, it’s canon. Meaning, deal with it.

Feel free to enjoy the series thinking that, though :)

A shoutout and thank you to all my followers who don’t 100% agree with me about everything and may not even like me all that much as a person sometimes, but still think we can get along, treat each other with respect, find value in each other’s work, and share fandom space.
